Shimla Bird Walk

RKMV’s Tragopan Society, the Eco Club, and the Departments of Zoology and Tourism, in collaboration with the Department of Forest, Himachal Pradesh, organised the Shimla Bird Walk on 13th February 2026 as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) 2026, a worldwide citizen science initiative led by Cornell University, USA. The GBBC is a global event, to observe, identify, and record bird species, thereby contributing valuable data for avian research and conservation.
Thirty students, accompanied by faculty members Ms. Kartik, Mr. Mrityunjay Chauhan, Dr. Rajesh Azad, and Mr. Srikant, commenced the walk from the gate of Potter's Hill Conservation Reserve, a site renowned for its rich biodiversity and natural heritage. Participants engaged in systematic bird observation and documentation along the trail.
A special highlight of the event was the integration of Artificial Intelligence in birding. Participants utilised digital platforms such as eBird and Merlin to supplement human observations, enhancing the accuracy of species identification and improving data collection. This meaningful blend of traditional field observation and modern technology enriched the overall learning experience.
The walk concluded at the scenic Chadwick Falls, marking a successful and fulfilling culmination of the activity.
